life saver

I’m at work and I love when things like this happen at work, it reminds me how much I love being a librarian…

A young lady comes to the reference desk and says she needs help finding some documents, says she was in the section a few minutes ago and just couldn’t find them. That is no surprise to me, deciphering the superintendent of documents classification system is sometimes a challenge for those of us who have experience! So I take her over to the section she needs to be in and I pull the documents right off. She says to me “thanks so much, you are a life saver.” And all I did was locate two documents for her :-)

The library can be such a confusing place for people, even instill a level of fear which is something I’ve always found interesting…and one of the reasons why I became a librarian - to help dispell that fear. Imagine that people have fear about using this library - considered a small to medium academic library. How do the students feel when they enter the library at Penn State a 4 million volume library? Or even the University of Pennsylvania where I spent time as an intern with 5 million volumes? How would I feel working in a library with 4 million volumes? Do you lose some intimacy with the library? Maybe we’ll find out…

as days go by…

Drew and I had a fantastic time in Florida. He missed his plane on Thursday and had to wait until Friday to arrive. My dad and Shelli’s fiancee Chris picked him up at the airport since I was busy with bachelorette festivities. They took him out with the guys and showed him a good time (i’m assuming). We didn’t get to see each other until he got home around 12:30am! Saturday was of course full of wedding day preparations and everything went very smoothly despite some serious bridezilla moments :-) Sunday we slept in, ate a fantastic breakfast and spent the day at the beach - which i’m grateful for because it rained ALL DAY monday and tuesday. My dad, donna, olivia, drew and I went out to dinner at Osaka a Japanses hibachi restaurant that my father absolutely loves. YUM! Is all I have to say. I got a little sushi but it wasn’t my meal since I figured we were at a hibachi restaurant I should have that experience. But let me tell you, the sushi was fantastic. well cooked rice, smooth buttery tuna, fresh wasabi. I certainly wanted to each much, much more! For dinner I had filet and lobster tail, drew had steak and shrimp. Tasty, tasty stuff.
All in all it was good to see him, hang out and be silly.

Shelli’s wedding was great, she was a beautiful bride. I’d have some pictures for you but Drew has the pics on his camera and his computer isn’t cooperating so…they will have to wait. Stephen, Jenn, Paige, Emily and Sadie made it and it was good to see all five of them. Paige and Emily spent most of the night down on the beach on the playground and Sadie spent the night on the dance floor! Seriously you couldn’t get her to stop dancing, it was great. Darrell and Jackie were there too and it was good to see them and catch up. Food was good, drinks were good, karaoke was hysterical. My dress fit great (due to the fact I’m now down about 15 lbs!) and the alterations were top notch.

The drives down and back were great fun too. It was a drive I’ve never done before and states I’ve never been through. Alabama was much more beautiful than i anticipated and I really enjoyed the scenery. Some interesting things happened on the drive home…first i realize that there has been the same truck in my passenger side mirror for quite some time. Dude just isn’t passing me. I don’t know how long he had been ther before i noticed, but long enough to make me notice. as i’m driving along dude pulls up next to me and smiles and waves…like he was flirting with me and trying to pick me up. I laughed cause I thought it was funny and something like that hadn’t happened since Ihelli and I used to drive down the shore and pick up guys on the way! But then it started getting creepy real fast as he kept pulling up next to me to try to get my attention. I never looked in his direction after the first wave…eventually he got off the highway and I was relieved. I was starting to worry he was going to follow me until I had to stop for gas or to pee or something.
Second, I’m on the phone with drew and I’m about to pass this tractor trailer and I see this guys face in his driver side mirror. I had to look twice because it looked like he had some sort of mask on…and sure enough he did! I started laughing pretty hard because the driver of this truck was wearing a scream mask. It was one of the most hilarious things I’ve ever seen. He was waving at folks as they passed him, I gave him a big thumbs up! Funny, funny stuff - guess he needs to keep his job interesting somehow!

On monday the 30th I have a phone interview with Penn State. It is very interesting because really - this will only be my second professional interview! I interviewed for the job here was offered the job and accepted so no need to go on other interviews. I’m a little nervous, but am taking some time and doing some preparation. Luckily I’ve been on the interviewer end of things often in the past four years so I know (or at least should) what is expected and what it will be like. Doesn’t make me any less nervous. I’m happy to have made it this far - even if I go no further. One big giant question mark. But a question mark that makes me think about priorities - both personal and professional.

Things have been going well with the move of my mother to macomb. she is being very….aware of not bugging me all the time and not calling every five minutes. I saw her monday and haven’t seen or talked to her since. So i’m not feeling overly crowded.

well, for now that is it…i can say this - i need another vacation :-)

emerald coast

next week at this time I’ll hopefully be hugging my sister and playing with my niece Olivia. I’m going to leave Tuesday night and stay over somewhere in Southern Illinois so I have time on Wednesday to be able to go through the Land Between the Lakes - it looks like a really interesting place. I’m looking forward to the drive down in general and getting to see Drew next Thursday night. I got us an oceanfront view at the hotel for the night of the wedding and I’m hoping we can do some camping at Gulf Islands National Seashore. Primitive camping is available and we can hike in a mile or so and camp on the beach - that would be pretty awesome to fall alseep and wake up to the sound of the ocean.

Drew will also be meeting the rest of my family. My dad and donna will be there, shelli and chris of course, darrell and jackie, stephen and jenn and all the girls. It will be interesting to see how it goes and what he thinks etc. It will just be good to see everyone and hang out and relax.

Saturday morning I think I am going to run my first 5k race ever! For breast cancer awareness month Macomb hosts a day called Paint the Town Pink and the hospital is sponsoring a race as a part of the activities for the day. I think it might be time to try it out…I’ve never run in a race before and nothing like trying a local one to get my feet wet. I wish Drew were here to see it though…

grand central station

have you ever been in a busy train station full of people going this way and that, running to catch trains, meetings, taxis they are late for…a sort of chaotic scene where so many things are happening at once and you don’t know what to look at and it makes your head spin? That is basically what my life feels like right now. I need to slow down.
