Google Earth

A few years ago my dad sent me a link to download this program called Keyhole. He liked it because it simulated flying. I looked at it, played around with it for a bit but then got caught up in other things. Last winter I remember hearing on the news that Google bought Keyhole and was going to use it in quite a fantastic way. In the summer of 2005 Google Earth was launched.

I just added a link to the Google Earth blog as I’ve just started having time to delve into this Google Earth thing. It’s pretty freakin’ amazing. I think about the fact that a mere 12 years ago I sat in front of a computer using command driven GIS programs and a rickety old pen plotter to draw my maps and now we have programs such as Google Earth.

Google Earth is going to be what I write about for my first column as column editor for the geospatial news column in Documents to the People. I’m quite excited. While Google Earth doesn’t have the analytical capabilities of a traditional GIS program, it’s ability to show data in 3D is top notch. I imagine I’ll be writing more as I learn more.

On the personal front - Meema is moving to Macomb on May 5! Yippee!! I am totally looking forward to getting to hang out with her and am in total denial about how it will change my mostly freestyle life, at least until my mom gets here.
